Today is the day our hike starts. We are leaving Oslo and taking the bus to Odda, our destination. In Odda our backpacking journey starts and I’m excited to get started. I don’t know what to expect. Well I do know it will be beautiful. Odda is a wonderful place. It’s a village in a valley between 2 lakes filled with freshly water from the mountains.
We set our alarm at 7:00 am. We take the bus at the camping at 8:52 and have to be on the bus to Odda at 9:45. We have almost 2 hours to get ready and pack up. Sounds easy right? Wrong. We barely make it on time. We get up, get dressed, have our breakfast and pack everything up including the tent. We aren’t used to it and it takes a long time. We just have enough time for my partner to take a shower, but I couldn’t.
We make it to the bus in time and go to Oslo bus terminals for the next bus to Odda. We used the 24-hours tickets we got yesterday from a dutch couple. In the bus terminals we go to the bathroom to brush our teeth and have one last go before our 7-hour long bus trip. We get on the bus to Odda. It’s a very nice trip. The bus goes along a beautiful road with nice views. We go by lakes, snowy mountains and waterfalls. It’s truly amazing. On the bus we only have a pack of raisins with us for eating. It fills our stomach but it’s not enough.
While on the bus we open our map and go through the plan again. When we get to Odda we will start hiking towards Freimstølen. On this way we will find a place to set up camp outside the village and spend the night there. The next day we will go further to Freimstølen, Møyfallsnuten and finally the cabin in Mosdalsbu. In Mosdalsbu we will take a calm day and go around the lake and go to Skjeggedal the next day and take the bus to Odda again.
We are not prepared
The plan was to go just outside Odda and set up tent. On our way to Freimstølen we had asked the way a couple of times. One of them was really helpful. He had also done this route a couple of times and have the same map as us. It was already around 6 pm. He told us that this is a beautiful route and showed us an awesome spot for camping on the top of Freimstølen. It is possible to get there in less than 3 hours being packed as we are.
So our plans changed. We were determent to make it to that spot and set up tent. We didn’t prepare for this and didn’t eat enough food. We had a protein bar on the way and just raisins on the bus. But we were determent. My partner a bit more than me 😆. So we started our climb. That’s one more thing we weren’t prepared for, the climb. Good lord it was steep. The climb averages around 65%. We only looked at distances and not at heights.
Slowly we went to the top. My legs are killing me. It’s steep and it has no ending. We go through the woods and keep on climbing and climbing. Before we went up there we saw 2 people and a dog going the same way. Somewhere in the woods we saw the dog again. I was so happy to see this dog. We thought we were at the top and that we made it. We were already walking for 2 hours. Then we saw the 2 persons again. We asked them how far it was. They told us that it would another 20 mins to reach the top and that we were half-way. HALF-WAY they said? How the hell do you get to the top in 20 mins when we were only half-way. It’s crazy.
But we were determent and continued the path. My legs were almost dead. But I would not let this mountain have me. I was going to make it, no matter what. When we were around 75% the way, my partner had it hard. I told her to take the tent out of her bag and I would carry it. That’s what we did. I was carrying 23 kg at that time. We barely made it to the top. It was just in time. I couldn’t continue anymore. My right-leg was having cramps, really bad. So we set up tent. We were so glad we made it.
Once we set up tent and warmed our self, we had to eat. But we weren’t hungry at all. We were exhausted. So I went through my bag and found a big cake. It was from the BIO-shop. This cake was like heaven. We opened it up and ate it all. It was so good. Close to our tent was a small water source were we could fill up our water bottles. This water was so fresh and amazing. Next we went to sleep. We still had a big day coming tomorrow. We didn’t set any alarm and I remember sleeping very well. Even though it doesn’t get dark in Norway at the end of June.
